Walmart and Ford are partnering to create a grocery delivery service, the service will use self-driving cars to make home deliveries. Walmart and Ford are currently testing the service in Florida’s Miami-Dade Country. They are also partnering with Postmates during their test run in Miami.
About the Walmart and Ford Test Run
Walmart and Ford are currently testing running the self-driving delivery service in Miami, they are working with Postmates for the trial period. The test run will allow consumers to order food for delivery and will also allow consumers to purchase other retail goods. The self-driving cars will collect data on consumer preferences, the data will help them determine what services to provide. The trial period will help Walmart and Ford determine what kinds of goods people would want to purchase and the best ways to interact with the self-driving vehicles for pickup.
Ford said that during the trial period, it will experiment with different types and modifications of vehicles to keep perishable goods fresh. They will also experiment with a variety of scenarios, such as multiple deliveries on one trip and the user experience of retrieving delivery items from a fully driverless vehicle. At the end of the trial period, Walmart and Ford will identify which goods they can feasibly transport. They will also figure out any issue that may need to be addressed to successfully deliver orders via self-driving vehicle.
Fords and Walmart Journey with Testing Self-Driving Cars and Home Deliveries
Ford has been testing the self-driving cars for food delivery services for a while now. The Walmart and Ford partnership is not the first time Ford and Postmates will be working together. Earlier this year, Ford and Postmates worked with various business in Miami like Dominos to test their self-driving cars for food deliveries. Ford used cars with sensors that customers could interact with to get their orders, the cars also had a locker system where the orders could be placed. Now Ford has expanded to include grocery deliveries.
Walmart has also dabbled in the home grocery delivery business in the past, but this will be the first time they will be using the self-driving cars to deliver the groceries. They tested home grocery delivery in more than 100 cities. Walmart plans to make the home grocery delivery option available in 800 stores by the end of the year and they plan to double that number by the end of 2019.
