Nigeria’s art scene is very fascinating and dynamic, recently Nigeria’s art scene has started to gather a lot of attention both locally and internationally. It is rapidly expanding and is currently a hotbed for artists with unparalleled talent. Today we would be interviewing one of such artist, we will be interviewing Olaniran Awosika. Olaniran Awosika is a Nigeria visual artist that’s based in Lagos. He is a contemporary abstract artist and today we would be talking to him to learn about who he is as an artist and all the things that inspire him.

 Please can you introduce yourself?

I’m Olaniran Awosika, I’m a graduate of architecture, and I’m a visual artist based in Lagos, Nigeria.

What you do for a living?

I’m a Architect and visual artist.

What type of art do you do?

I think most of what I do would fall under the category of contemporary abstract art.

 Apart from painting do you dabble in any other forms of art?

Well, yeah… I actually started out with graphite and then I experimented with ink for a while, I still work with them every now and then. Looking to explore pastels and charcoal in the near future.

 When did you start painting and why did you decide to become an artist?

I think my first experience with painting came when I was a kid. But I didn’t start painting seriously until my first year in the university…. The freedom. I can express myself/thoughts however I choose to.

  What inspires your work?

Anything and everything to be honest. Life.

What themes do you pursue?

Humanity, socio-political issues… conscious art basically

How would you describe your artistic style?

Abstract and contemporary

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to?

Me, Myself and I 😌. I’m inspired by so many artists, I really don’t know to be honest.

What food, drink and song inspires you?

Lol! A bottle of white wine, would soothe my nerves and helps me unwind after a long day… I’d eat almost anything as long as it tastes good to me…I love alternative music

What do you find inspiring about people?

It’s really inspiring to see people taking bold steps to actually pursue their own dreams.

What’s your favorite and least favorite part about being an artist?

My favorite part would definitely be that moment when the creative process flows seamlessly. From conception to execution. It’s a very exulting feeling. The worst would have to be the creative/art blocks…Lol!

 What would you call your greatest achievement as an artist thus far?

I think this would be the moment when i decided to make art my main gig.

Where has your art been featured?

A private exhibition. Once

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I believe every response of approval is a memorable one, it’s encouraging when people appreciate my work and can also understand or relate to the message it carries…

 What role does the artist have in society?

The artist is an historian of sorts. He/She preserves culture and heritage, also creates awareness and passes across conscious messages via whatever creative medium or media he/she so chooses.
