KLM Airline is under a lot of fire on social media with many people calling the brand’s policies and views outdated and old fashioned. This is very ironic seeing as the brand is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. A fact many social media users are using to bash the airline. The airline came under fire after a passenger complained that the airline tried to make her cover up when she was breastfeeding.

KLM Airline is Facing Backlash for Trying to Cover Up a Breastfeeding Woman

Mother Shelby Angel the passenger, went on KLM’s Facebook page to complain about her treatment during a flight. She stated that during her recent trip to Amsterdam from San Francisco, she was handed a blanket by a flight attendant. The flight attendant to her to cover up her one-year-old daughter as she was breastfeeding her.  Shelby Angel refused to do that, stating that her daughter didn’t like to be covered. The flight attendant then told her that she would have to deal with the complaints. In the Facebook post, Shelby explained that she didn’t receive a single complaint.

She wrote, “Instead of standing up for and protecting breastfeeding mothers and our children, already under the duress faced by flying with our young children, KLM would rather hold up antiquated values that shame women’s bodies”.  She also stated that she placed a complaint to the airline and was told that the flight attendant acted correctly.

KLM Responds

After the post by Shelby was seen by a Twitter user, Heather Yemm tweeted at the airline. She asked the brand to share its policy on breastfeeding. This was how the airline responded “Breastfeeding is permitted at KLM flights. However, to ensure that all our passengers of all backgrounds feel comfortable on board, we may request a mother to cover herself while breastfeeding, should other passengers be offended by this.”

KLM Comes Under Fire from Social Media Users

Their response didn’t go over well with social media user, with many condemning the airline. Many called the airline outdated and old fashioning citing its recent tweets celebrating its upcoming 100th anniversary in October.

The criticism comes after the company was praised just last month as forward-thinking. It was praised for its latest campaign that urged consumers to fly less for the environmental good.
