The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival is the largest ice and snow festival in the world. The festival sees between 10 billion to 15 billion attendees annually, with up to 18 million people showing up for the festival in 2017. The festival holds in China annually and starts on the 5thof January and last for about a  month. The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival originated from the local Harbiner traditional ice lantern show garden party. The first official Harbrin festival was held in Zhaolin Park in 1985 after locals realized thatthey could turn the humble event/ festival to a larger and official festival. The festival already attracted a ton of tourist who came to see ice lanterns.

Every year the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival features different themes. People from all over the world come to compete at the festival, it is a very competitive event. There are sculpture competitions which is one of the main events. The festival is known for its lights that brilliantly illuminate the sculptures and architectural structures. Fireworks also light up the sky in the evenings. Apart from the sculpture competition other fun events include alpine skiing, ice lantern exhibition, icegolf, winter swimming and ice archery. What sets this festival apart is the scale and size of the sculptures and the beautiful lighting.
