Fox Sports Africa Rebrands as ESPN


The Walt Disney Company Africa just recently announced that it will be rebranding the FOX Sports channels in Africa. The company announced that it will be rebranding Fox Sports to ESPN. It will take effect from the 30th of August 2019.

They will be rebranding FOX Sports and FOX Sports 2 channels to ESPN and ESPN2. Walt Disney Company Africa has assured the channels’ loyal fans that the transition will not change the programming lineup on ESPN and ESPN2. They will continue to include the leagues and sporting events consumers have watched on FOX Sports. These events include the English Football League Championship, Turkish Super Lig, Belgian Pro League, Dutch Eredivisie, Scottish Premiership, Major League Soccer (MLS), Major League Baseball (MLB) and Professional Fighters League (PFL).

They also assured loyal fans that they will also continue to add exciting new sports properties to the existing line-up in the future. The channels will also remain committed to developing local and regional sports events and intellectual property. One of which is the WAFU Cup of Nations 2019. This will place from 28 September to 13 October in Thies, Senegal.

ESPN Speaks on the Rebrand of Fox Sports

Frank Rutten, ESPN Europe and Africa spoke on the rebranding. He stated that rebranding as ESPN is a natural transition following the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company. The ESPN brand is synonymous with sports, is one of the most valuable brands in the world and has an established global reach.

Christine Service, senior vice president and country manager, The Walt Disney Company Africa also spoke on the rebranding announcement. She stated that the brand is “excited to grow their broadcast offering under the new ESPN banner. They are also excited to do this with their existing programming and intellectual property. All this forms part of the brand’s plans for the future.  She also stated that they are looking forward to developing both channels in the months and years ahead.
