Econet Media a subsidiary of Kwese TV has just recently announced that it would be streamlining its business. In an effort to do this Econet Media would be shutting down its Kwese DTH platform. They will now be focusing on three core services:
- Kwesé Free Sports (KFS): It is Africa’s largest free-to-air TV service
- Kwesé iflix: It is Africa’s leading mobile video-on-demand sports and entertainment platform
- The Kwesé Play: It is is a leading edge video streaming service
Econet Media to Streamline
By focusing on the above-mentioned services, they will be streamlining its direct-to-home satellite television service. They plan to reduce third-party channels available on the bouquet. They will also be removing the Kwesé branded sports (excluding KFS) and general entertainment channels. Econet Media’s new bouquet will carry FTA, religious, and news channels which will be available to viewers for a minimal fee.
Econet Media Builds Content Creation Hub
They also plan to create its own content creation hub called Kwese studios. The decision to establish a content creation hub came after the recognised the importance of carrying original local content. Econet media plans to use Kwese studios to develop original programming. They plan to make it a platform for African producers, scriptwriters, actors and directors to tell authentic African stories. The establishment of the content creation hub tallies with Kwese’s commitment to providing affordable medium content. Econet media’s goal for Kwese studios is to be the home of African content.
Why Econet Media is Refocusing its Business
In a statement, Joe Hundah the group president and chief executive of Econet Media said that their repositioning efforts are a timely response to current market trends. They believe that their new business strategy will give Econet Media a competitive edge in the industry. He said that this new strategy will help to safeguards the future success of the business. He stated that the refocus on digital services will provide Kwese with growth opportunities.
