The Albuquerque International Balloon festival is the largest balloon festival in the world, it holds yearly at Albuquerque New Mexico. The festival is a nine-day event that holds from the 6th of October to the 14th of October. The Albuquerque International Balloon Festival sees over 500 hot air balloons each year. For the nine days, hundreds of colourful balloons float above the city every morning, the float over the Sandia Mountains. The Albuquerque International Balloon Festival is a beautiful and colourful event, it is considered to be the world’s most photographed event. It is said that over 850,000 people visit this amazing festival yearly.

The first ever Albuquerque International Balloon Festival was held in 1972 to celebrate the 50th birthday of KOB-AM radio. In the first ever festival only 13 balloons participated. The festival steady grew until it became the largest balloon festival in the world. The festival is a major tourist attraction for Albuquerque, it is the largest tourist attraction and is a major source of income for the city and its local businesses. The festival is also a great opportunity for visitors to experience the New Mexican culture. It showcases a lot of the New Mexican culture and history, it also features numerous cultural exhibitions.

Why to Attend the Albuquerque International Balloon Festival

The colourful balloon festival has a lot of fun activities to offer visitors. Here are some:

Dawn Patrol

The Dawn Patrol is a major event at the Albuquerque International Balloon festival. Before Sunrise, Dawn Patrol Pilots take off and they fly until its light enough to see landing sites.  Other balloon pilots love to watch the Dawn Patrol because it gives them an early idea of speeds and directions at different altitudes. Other attendees just love to watch the colourful event.

Balloon Glows

The Balloon glows are a beautiful sight to behold, at night the balloons are illuminated at night by their propane burners. The balloons just stand there, static so observes can really appreciate their beauty. This is a major highlight of this event.

Mass Ascensions

This is one of the biggest and most captivating events at the festival.  All the participant’s launch in two waves, the fill the sky with hundreds of balloons at once.

Special Shape Rode

This is an event that everyone, even children will enjoy. At this event, uniquely shaped balloons are launched at the same time into the sky.

Balloon Ride

It goes without saying, that one of the fun activities you can enjoy at this wonderful festival is a balloon ride.
