Following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa against Nigerians, Nigerian brands are stepping up to help the Nigerians affected. Nigerian airline Airpeace donated an aeroplane to help bring back Nigerians in South Africa. Airtel is the latest brand addressing the issue with a charitable donation. The Telecom brand has donated phones bundled with SIMs and airtime to SA returnees.
Airtel Nigeria Donates Phones, SIMs, Airtime to SA Returnees
Airtel Nigeria recently donated phones, sims, airtime to the second batch of SA returnees. According to Airtel, they are making the donation to help them settle down. The donation is also to help the returnees make instant connections with their loved ones, family members and friends across the country.
The telecom brand stated that the donation is a token of their affection, love and support for their fellow countrymen who are just coming out of a difficult situation. Airtel met the second batch of returnees to welcome them. They made the donation at the airport and carried out the customary SIM card registration exercise in fulfilment of the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) guidelines on owning a phone line
Nigerian Diaspora Commission Speaks on Airtel’s Donation
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, spoke on the telecom giant’s donation. She commended the brand for helping its fellow country-men in settling back in. Dabiri-Erewa asked that other brands take Airtels lead and help the returnees settle down to life in their home country.
She also talked about how the brand has always helped returnees in the past. She mentioned the time the brand offered their hands of support to returnees from Libya. According to her, the brand is also partnering with the Commission to further help Nigerians in the Diaspora.
Returnee Speaks on Airtel’s Donation
Olasukanmi Obadina, a returnee from SA spoke on the donation. He was full of praises for the telecom brand. He described the donation as a thoughtful act which showed love and care. Obadina mentioned that he was really encouraged by the love and support Airtel has extended to him and other returnees.
