Airtel Africa Partners MasterCard to Transform Digital Payment Landscape in Africa

Airtel Africa recently announced a partnership with MasterCard. This partnership is set to transform the digital payment landscape in Africa. The partnership will see MasterCard giving over 100 million Airtel Africa mobile phone users across 14 African countries access to Mastercard’s global network.

About the Airtel Africa Partnership with MasterCard

The partnership will be very beneficial to Airtel Africa customers who are also Airtel Money customers. Airtel Money customers will be given access to a MasterCard virtual (non-plastic) card. The card allows Airtel Money customers, even those without a bank account, to make payments to local and global online merchants that accept Mastercard cards. They will also be able to make in-person payments at outlets via Quick Response (QR) codes. They will also enjoy competitive pricing and preferential exchange rates for international payments. Airtel Money customers will also be connected to a global online market place.

Airtel Speaks on the Partnership

Raghunath Mandava, the CEO of Airtel Africa spoke about the partnership. He talked about how the two companies share a passion for digital transformation. They both want to make mobile financial services accessible to everyone across the continent.  He explained that the partnership will enable over 100 million Airtel Africa customers to make safe mobile money purchases online and in person.

Mandava also explained that the partnership will also significantly bolster Airtel’s position as one of the largest offline-to-online digital payment network in Africa.  He expressed the company’s excitement to embark on the partnership with a globally trusted brand like MasterCard.  He stated the partnership is revolutionary and will give millions of people better access to the digital and online world.

Amnah Ajmal, Executive Vice President for Market Development, Mastercard Middle East and Africa also spoke about the partnership. He stated that across the MEA region their digital partnerships strategy remains focused on enabling digital transformation for their partners. They want to do this so that their consumers can enjoy seamless access to payments and a superior experience.

He expressed the company’s excitement to be partnering with Airtel to lead the transition to digital by enabling access to their millions of consumers for online and in-person payments across the globe.
