Recently there have been xenophobic attacks against other Africans, especially Nigerians living in South Africa. Videos emerged on social media showing other Africans especially Nigerians being brutalized in South Africa. The videos show businesses and property being destroyed, people were also brutalized and some were killed in South Africa. The videos have sparked public outrage, especially from Nigerians.
In response to these attacks, Nigerian Airline Air Peace has stepped up and offered to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa for free.
Air Peace to Evacuate Nigerians from South Africa For Free
Air Peace made the announcement through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with Air Peace informed the general public that following the recent unfortunate xenophobic attacks of foreign nationals which include Nigerians in South Africa, the Proprietor of Air Peace Airlines Chief Allen Onyema, has volunteered to send an aircraft from today, Friday 6th September 2019 to evacuate Nigerians. This aircraft is meant to safely convey Nigerians who wish to return to Nigeria free of charge.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Air Peace then advised the general public to inform their relatives in South Africa. They were encouraged to take advantage of this laudable gesture by the Nigerian Airline. Interested Nigerians in South Africa were then advised to liaise with the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria and the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg for further necessary arrangement.
It is unclear how many passengers the aircraft will be carrying. It is also unclear if the airline plans to make another trip in the near future. Many Nigerians applauded the airline’s noble gesture. Air Peace is one of the first Nigeria brands to step up in such a big way and many Nigerians are appreciative of the gesture.
